Kawaii Coolness from Mei Mei

Cajsa Lilliehook covers the best in virtual world screenshot art and digital painting

Mei Mei’s “All my best memories are with you” is not just a darling picture of two friends, but one that demonstrates how the details can reinforce the idea of a picture. The two of them are wearing the same school uniform but in different colors. Now, with a casual glance, you won’t even notice that the background elements are the same colors, with the pink structures behind the woman in pink and the blue elements behind the woman in blue. It’s something you might not see, but you will feel it.

“Into your galaxy” is fun. I don’t know what’s going on. There are these critters that look like a cross between Tweety Bird and the Minions that fly around doing their tasks. She looks like a kawaii camera operator with a color-coordinated camera and then there are these black tentacle-like things swooping around after the Tweety-minions. But with her camera, there is the vague idea that the tentacles are a little like film…I know, it’s a weird idea, but it’s a feeling and Mei Mei seems to make me feel things.

“People watching” is such a vibe. It reminds me of the collages we would make back in high school before that activity was ruined by being professionalized into something akin to art with scrapbooking and mood boards. We used to get together on a Friday night, everyone bringing magazines. We would mix up a big pot of cornstarch and water to make glue, listen to music, and cut out words and pictures, not trying to create art but to tell stories. It was hilarious.

Mei Mei’s photostream is about friendship. It’s cute, adorable with its youthful avatars and pastel colors, essentially kawaii.
