“Meditation” acrylic, 36″ x 36″

Some things are just meant to be. I had just sold my office supply business and moved to the Venice Canals in Los Angeles, California. My friends were going to San Miguel de Allende, Mexico and I said that I wanted to go.

They were going for an art class, so I agreed that I would take the five-day painting class. I lucked out that the instructor was Bob Burridge, who is a wonderful teacher. From that point, I learned to paint by taking courses from many fellow artists across the U.S. If I learn one little thing from a course, it is well worth it.

“Glory” mixed media, 36″ x 36″

Living in Venice—the canals, the ocean, the funky street art and the laid-back lifestyle—fills my soul. In my tiny studio, I let my intuition and creativity lead the way. I scribble to activate my canvas, and then I let the paint take me where it wants to go. It’s not so easy for a strong woman to let go.

Sometimes I incorporate painted paper to add texture. I like how it brings something arbitrary into the piece. I am always trying new things, still taking classes.

It seems that all my work turns into a landscape with a distant horizon. I feel that it represents an optimistic future. We make our life what we want, just as we make art to satisfy ourselves.

“Eternal Love” acrylic, 30″ x 40″

I fight against too much clutter and too much realism. I want to create abstract art. And I strive to be colorful and want my inner strength to shine through my work.

“Road Map” acrylic, 36″ x 36″

It took me five years to get up the nerve to call myself an artist and show anywhere except on the fence in my backyard. My girlfriend Deb and I took a booth together to shore up our courage. I have now successfully shown and sold in several large shows such as The Other Art Fair in Santa Monica, The Laguna Beach Festival of the Arts, and Art San Diego.

I struggle keeping up with Instagram, Facebook, and the business end of things. I have realized that high quality scans of my work allow me to sell paper prints and canvas enhanced prints which have been popular. Selling art is an entirely different conversation from creating art, and I have learned a lot from my peers and each different show.

What keeps me going? My love of messing around with paint. I love hearing the comments from art fair patrons. Some just walk by, but then there are those that stare. My favorite comments are that they feel a certain peacefulness, but with a bit of excitement. I tell them that it is my spicy side coming through! I was meant to be an artist and bring beautiful things into this world. It is an honor.
